Support imprisoned journalist Andrei Aliaksandrau and win original Liverpool FC T‑shirt

For media man­ag­er Andrei Ali­ak­san­drau, it is his third con­sec­u­tive birth­day that he spends behind bars.

Foot­ball takes pride of place among the journalist’s many hob­bies. He loves play­ing the game and has been a fan of the leg­endary Liv­er­pool team since child­hood. In prison, Andrei Ali­ak­san­drau trans­lat­ed the club anthem into the Belaru­sian lan­guage.

Andrei Stryzhak, a co-founder of the BYSOL Foun­da­tion, told the BAJ mon­i­tor­ing ser­vice that they decid­ed to cel­e­brate the birth­day of the close friend and soul mate in an non­triv­ial way.

“An orig­i­nal Liv­er­pool club T‑shirt with Aliaksandrau’s name on the back and squad num­ber 27 – his birth­day – will be avail­able with­in a char­i­ty raf­fle,” Andrei Stryzhak said, spec­i­fy­ing that the mon­ey col­lect­ed in the lot­tery will be spent on sup­port­ing Ali­ak­san­drau and fam­i­lies of oth­er polit­i­cal pris­on­ers.

Andrei Ali­ak­san­drau and his part­ner Iry­na Zlobi­na were detained in Min­sk on 12 Jan­u­ary 2021 and accused of financ­ing protests (parts 1 and 2 of Arti­cle 342 of the Crim­i­nal Code). In ear­ly July 2021, Ali­ak­san­drau was also charged under part 1 of Arti­cle 356 of the Crim­i­nal Code (high trea­son).

Last Octo­ber, Min­sk Region­al Court sen­tenced Iry­na to 9 years in prison, while Andrei received one of the harsh­est sen­tences ever hand­ed down to Belaru­sian jour­nal­ists – 14 years in prison.
