  • Editor of news website Pieršy Rehijon arrested in Brest

Alieh Supruniuk, an editor of the news website Pieršy Rehijon, was arrested at his home in Brest late on Tuesday.

According to Mr. Supruniuk’s wife, police officers took away her husband at about 10:20 p.m.

“After he was driven away, she tried to find out where he was and what he was accused of,” Pieršy Rehijon reported. “She was told that he was at the Lieninski district police station in Brest and was detained. A local police officer did not say why the journalist was detained, explaining that he had no right to provide this information.”

Mr. Supruniuk is a member of the Belarusian Association of Journalists. He was in charge of its Brest branch for some time.

He used to work for Brestsky Kurier, a newspaper covering news in Brest and the Brest region, and a number of other publications.
